How it gets done
Which of these apply depends on your job:
- Before starting rigging, establish a way for workers above and below to communicate visually or audibly.
- Examine the tree from every angle before selecting branches for pruning.
- First eliminate dead, broken, and crossing limbs, then assess weaker ones and those growing inward.
- Remove most of the branch's weight with a second cut farther out, then make the finishing cut just beyond the branch collar.
- When reducing a branch, cut it back to a lateral branch that's one-third to half as thick as the removed portion.
- Limit crown removal to no more than 25% at once; divide larger trims over multiple years.
