When a tree needs trimming

Branches rubbing on the house or garage, limbs reaching toward utility lines, and dead or broken wood are the usual reasons to call. A canopy so dense that light and air can't get to the lower branches is another. A tree that is growing lopsided or leaning hard to one side also needs work.

Visalia sits in climate zone 3B, with hot, dry summers that often reach triple digits and most of the rain in winter. We look at a tree with that in mind, since dead wood and weak, crowded growth are what you notice first after a long dry stretch.

This work can lead into tree pruning. Looking for tree service in Visalia? See every service we offer.

How we scope the job

We walk the tree with you before any cutting starts. We check its size and shape, look for deadwood and cracks, and note any branches too close to structures or lines. Then we tell you which branches come off and why.

If a limb turns out to be too big, or sits too close to the roof or a line, for the cut we planned, we change the plan with you on the walk-through and leave that limb alone until we have a safe way to take it.

How we trim

Pruning shears handle branches up to ¾ inch in diameter. Lopping shears take branches up to 1½ inches. Anything bigger is cut in stages.

For a large limb, we make an underside cut about 18 inches from the trunk, one-third to one-half of the way through. We make a second cut about an inch farther out and keep cutting until the limb breaks free. The final cut goes just beyond the branch collar. We leave the collar intact and no stub behind.

We clean up the debris as we work, so the yard is tidy when we leave.

What it costs

Trimming a tree under 25 feet runs $175 to $950. Tree size and the amount of cutting move the number within that range. Branches near power lines or structures slow the work and can push it higher. Ask for that range when you call and we'll give it to you. Once we've looked at the tree, we write up the exact price and hand it to you before any cutting begins.
