We do it when heavy limbs could split off at a union, or when a storm has left a mature tree damaged but worth saving over removal.

When a tree needs bracing

Look for cracks where major limbs meet the trunk, or a lean that has gotten worse after wind or rain. If a union looks like it could split under its own weight, rods can help the tree carry the load.

Before we decide on rods, we check the wood around the union for decay or loss of strength. Rods need sound wood to hold. If the wood around a union is too far gone, hardware won't fix it, and we'll tell you that on the visit.

How we plan and install the job

We plan the number of rods and where each one goes before any drilling starts. Every rod means a hole through live wood, so we use only as many as the tree needs. We test the wood around each planned spot for strength loss first.

For a through-rod, we drill completely through the tree section, run a threaded rod through, add washers and nuts, and tighten the terminations. Where a cable is the better fit, we use eye bolts and cable dead-end grips.

What bracing costs in Visalia

Bracing rods run $175 to $725. A tree that needs several rods, or one where the union is awkward to reach, lands toward the top of that range. A single easy rod lands near the bottom.

On the phone we can give a typical range, and the exact number is set after we see the tree and test the wood at the union. If a planned rod site turns out to be weak wood, we change the plan and tell you the revised price before we drill anything.

Drainage areas and cleanup

Most of Visalia's rain falls in winter, and the city sends much of it through storm drains to groundwater-recharge basins. The city asks owners to keep drainage areas clear of brush and debris. If your tree stands near a drain or drainage area, we keep trimmings and drilling debris out of it.
