We grind the stump below grade and leave the hole filled with soil and wood chips. Not every stump has to go, but when one's in the way, we handle it.
When to grind a stump
Grind it when it's in the way of a mower, a new bed, a patio or a fence line, or when it's a tripping hazard. Grind it when it's rotting and you want the spot back. If it's out of the way and stable, you can leave it. Some people keep one as a garden feature or a seat, and that's a fair call.
Many projects also need storm damage cleanup. Shopping for tree service in Visalia? Our home page has more.

How we scope and price the job
Diameter at the widest point is what drives the price, so that's the first thing we measure. An extra-large stump, 36 to 48 inches across, runs $450 to $600. Quote us your stump's diameter by phone and you'll get a ballpark for that size right then.
Before we start the machine, we check the grinder's fuel and oil, the guards, the safety controls, the cutting wheel and the teeth. If any safety component isn't working properly, the grinder doesn't run.

The work itself
If flying chips could reach your house, a fence or a neighbor's property, we set up a plywood debris barrier first. The grinder takes the stump down below grade. Then we fill the hole with soil and the wood chips from the grind, so the spot is ready to seed, sod or plant.
Keep people and animals at least 50 feet from the grinder while it's running. That means kids, pets and anyone watching from the yard.
Valley oaks and permits
If the stump is a valley oak on your own property, you no longer have to submit an application to the city to prune or remove it. Valley-oak work on public property still requires a permit. If the tree was on city ground, that has to be sorted out before we grind. Whether the oak stood on your lot or on public land decides which of those applies.
