Choosing a Tree Service Contractor: How We Scope and Price a Job

Most of what changes a tree job in Visalia is the setting: wires overhead, a house or fence underneath, and a tree that may not be able to take rigging.

This page covers how those things change the plan, the permit situation for valley oaks, and what the add-on work costs.

When to schedule

Summers here are hot and dry, often triple digits, and most of the rain comes in winter. That is the backdrop for routine trimming, and it is why we plan crew days around the weather.

A tree leaning over a roof, or dead limbs hanging near wires, does not wait for a convenient season. Those go to the front of the schedule.

Power lines and what we bring

Wires come first. If we cannot hold the 10-foot clearance, the utility has to de-energize and ground the lines before anyone climbs. That can add lead time, so we flag it when we quote.

The quote also says whether the job is done with pole tools or from in the tree, and how we will clear the site afterward.

How rigging changes the job

Rigging is a decision we make for each tree. We work out whether the job needs it and whether our crew can use it safely on that tree. If a tree is too weak to hold a line, the plan changes.

Where there is open ground, sections can come down in bigger pieces. Over a house, a fence or a driveway, we cut smaller and lower each piece on a line. That takes longer, and the quote reflects it.

Valley oaks and permits

Private property owners no longer need an application to prune or remove a valley oak. On public property a permit is still required, so if the tree stands on city or other public ground, that has to be in place before any work starts.

What the extras cost

Cabling and bracing, which supports a tree we are keeping instead of removing, runs $250 to $1,350. Complete stump removal runs $125 to $175.

We can give a typical range over the phone, and we confirm the exact number once we have seen the tree and the site. The written quote lists the stump as its own line, so you can see the removal price and the stump price separately.
